House of Sharing is a shelter for victims of Japanese military sexual slavery in WWII and a place which continues to establish an accurate historical view through The Museum of Sexual Slavery by Japanese Military.

The House of Sharing is a shelter for victims of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, or “Comfort Women”, who were taken from the early 1930s to the end of WWII. The House of Sharing Establishment Committee was founded in June 1992 with the purpose of building a home for the surviving 'comfort women'. This was accomplished through raising funds from various circles of society including Buddhist organizations in Korea.

Opening House of Sharing

In October 1992, the House of Sharing had it's first opening ceremony at Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul but had to be moved to several different districts within Seoul. The House of Sharing was finally moved to its present location ; with a newly-built welfare complex for the victims, composed of three buildings (two as living space, one as a education center). The facilities have expanded into a five-building complex on a 6,000 square meter area including the Musuem of Sexual Slavery by Japanese Military which opened its doors in 1998. Finding Historical Truth and Requesting
Sincere Repentance of Past Affairs

The victims of Japanese military sexual slavery continue their struggle for a formal apology and legal compenstion from the Japanese government to rebuild their dignity. They have become activists, giving testimonies, protesting and traveling abroad to spread awareness of this historical truth. Every Wednesday, they participate in the weekly protest in front of Japanese embassy in Seoul, sponsored by “The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan” in order to educate the public of the Japanese military’s brutal abuse of these women and to put pressure on the Japanese government to apologize for their past atrocities. The House of Sharing is one of the leaders in education citizens about the history of Korea in WWII and the atrocities that were committed against its women.
239 women have registered as a victim of Japanese military sexual slavery to South Korean government as of December 2016. As of 2001 there are 211 registered survivors in North Korea.
